About Why We Explore!

Science, to us, isn’t just test tubes and lab coats. It’s knowing how our minds work, where we came from, where we are, and where we’re going. It’s to help examine the cogs and gears of our big, beautiful universe and understand our place in it. To us, it’s an adventure, but not one we can go on alone. Join us as we look deeper into normal and outlandish occurrences alike.
We here at Faraday’s Candle are composed of a two-sister team. Rorie, the older sister, is currently crafting the bulk of the posts and research, and Didi, the younger sister, posts quotes occasionally, suggests ideas for articles, and gets Rorie through sporadic plagues of writer’s block.
We don’t post entirely regularly, but as frequently as can be managed. We’d love to see your contributions and suggestions in the comments. Let’s all work together to explore our wonderful universe!

Please subscribe to our blog to hear the latest.

It’s an amazing world of science… let’s go exploring!

P.S.: Just wanted to mention- our parents do no ghostwriting! However, Mom handles our social media and moderates comments, and Dad organizes our madcap adventures into nature.

Yes, Science is indeed awesome 😀

  43. I love to see young people who love science. I love art but have recently discovered that there is a wonderful combination of science and art. Science can inform my art, but it is such a large world I need to focus on a specific area. Any ideas?

  44. I left you a comment on your blog. Good luck!

  45. somemaid says:

Science is ace. I’m really enjoying reading your posts. Have to ask though who is your favourite doctor. I think mine has to be Sylvester McCoy.

  46. Matt Smith! We all kind off agree & disagree on it! Capaldi has shown a vulnerability that none off the others have shown to this extent. Bow ties are cool!

  47. somemaid says:

Bow ties are undoubtedly cool. I like Capaldi especially as his Doctor seems to have so many links with the really early doctors.

  48. So fascinating to see your great interest in science. Too many young people think that it just isn’t cool. I hope you never lose your fascination with it.

  49. Fun site girls, keep it up. I will share this with my youngest I bet she will enjoy it too.

  50. Oh thank you so so much! We love love science. Their input would be greatly appreciated.

  70. It has been wonderful meeting you!

  71. I am writing to commend your interest and your blogging. Self-hosting should add to your sophistication with the internet and digital skills. I am a retired physician/scientist/educator. My wife, a DSc Radiation biologists, is a scientist.
For years, she worked with our school boards to promote science in our public schools. You apparently, have made a great start.
My advice is to write something, no matter how small, every day. Do it likes a musician practicing their scales. Writing skills build. Start by walking and then running –one day your writing will be flying, It will serve you very well in any field. http://therogerspost.com/home/ several posts on writing and blogging. Best wishes. ccr

I totally agree…. and when science meets art that is when the magic happens ^_^

Ps interesting choice of a blog name Faraday’s candle thats so poetic, cause maybe I picture Faraday’s candle as the one he was hunched over in his lab “discovering” wonderful things about electricity.

  93. Love, love LOVE your blog, girls. And go, women in science! Score!
My daughter has been a total science and math fanatic from the moment she first saw the night sky. And now she’s studying aero/astro engineering at MIT. We need bright and curious girls like the two of you to grab the baton and stay in the race.
Look forward to reading more of your articles. Keep up the inspiring work. Cheers!

  94. Faraday's Candle says:

Shelley. Thank you so very much. The girls need to hear more from women like you who support their endeavors. They want to share science to everyone including those who are normally not interest. Again thank you for your wonderful comment and good luck to your daughter….MIT. Wow!

It’s an amazing world of science…let’s go exploring!

  105. Millie Thom says:

What a wonderful idea for a blog! It’s so good to see someone promoting the world of science, especially two schoolgirls. My husband and I were both science teachers, he a chemist and myself a geologist who has taught every science discipline going! As you say in your blog description: ‘It’s an amazing world of science…let’s go exploring’.
I’m looking forward to reading your posts, and learning so much more myself!

  106. Faraday's Candle says:

Thank you so so much. Kids who are into science need a lot of support though it is not as “geeky” as it was considered in the past. There is still a need.
Geology is of great interest and was heightened when they went to National Parks this summer (the National Parks need our support too). Physics, chemistry, biology and so much more are great topics of conversation around them. Thankfully there is Netflix…lol.

  107. Faraday's Candle says:

I wanted to say Thank You for having been a teacher!!

  108. Hey Faraday’s Candle! I’ve nominated you for a Real Neat Blog Award.

  111. milliethom says:

Hello! Just to let you know that I’ve nominated you for the Quotes Challenge. (I did do a ping back to this page, but it doesn’t seem to have worked.) With your great interest in science, I wondered whether you would know some interesting ‘science’ quotes you’d like to share – although the 3 quotes you choose can be on any topic at all. Naturally, there is no obligation to accept, but if you would like to check out the rules, here’s the link to my post (Day 3).

  112. Ganesh says:

Nice and inspiring blog, dear friend! Thanks for following “Known is a drop, Unknown is an Ocean”. 🙂

  114. Faraday's Candle says:

This sounds wonderful! The girls can have it out by tomorrow! Thank you for including them.

  116. milliethom says:

Thank you so much for accepting. I’d noticed the odd science quote on your blog and thought it might be a good idea for you. Of course, the quotes can be on any topic you like, so I’ll be interested to see what the girls come up with. (My bet’s on science, mind you!).

  117. Faraday's Candle says:

    Your bet is correct!

  118. clanton1934 says:

i can’t wait out the three days – (at my age, one does not buy “green bananas”); so here are all three of mine in

1st day “Grown-ups love figures. When you tell them that you have made a new friend, they never ask you any questions about essentail matters. They never say to you, “What does his voice sound like? What games does he love best? Does he collect butterflies?” Instead, they demand: “How old is he? How many brothers has he? How much does he weigh? How much money does his father make?” Only from these figures do they think they have learned anything about him.
“And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”
“All grown-ups were once children… but only few of them remember it.”
    Antoine de Saint-Exuprey

2nd day: “Brick walls are in your path to keep others with less motivation, out from the prize”
    Randy Pausch

3rd day: I have run the forty year thing twice; I’ve started on my third lap! Waive as I go by.
    Charles Clanton Rogers

  119. Faraday's Candle says:

This is wonderful. Are you planning to put all three quotes in one post. It would be wonderful!

Your comments are absolutely wonderful! Thank you thank you!!

It’s an amazing world of science…let’s go exploring!

  127. Kerry S. says:

Please tell me that last sentence is a conscious reference to Calvin and Hobbes: “It’s a magical world, Hobbes ol’ buddy… Let’s go exploring!”

  128. pintowski says:

    Hey ya, thank you.

    We’ll explore

I thought you probably did know of him, and have seen him, but on the chance that you had not, I wanted to share this with you!
